St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a building of national significance, is currently undergoing a €9.0million refurbishment of its roof over a construction period of 2 years. The majority of the slates on the Cathedral’s roof have been in place since the 19th Century, when Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness funded the last major restoration of the building. In the intervening 150 years, time and the weather have taken their toll. Once the roof is stripped all slates will be replaced with new slates from the same quarry in Wales. This project is ‘once in a lifetime’ and very much a labour of love for all those involved.
